Save More, Shop Less To Get Through Debt

Debt Sucks: Ask Yourself, Do I Have Enough?

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Can you really shop to you drop and save?  It sounds too good to be true and maybe it is!

Our debt expert Ja'Net Adams joined WFMY News 2's Tracey McCain with one question that you need to ask yourself before you over spend.

"We just celebrated two holidays and neither one of the holidays was Thanksgiving.  They were Black Friday and Cyber Monday," said Adams.  "If you took the time to look at the TV last week and this past Monday that is all people were talking about.  These two events get us excited and that excitement a lot of the time makes us spend more money than we need to, but if we ask ourselves "Do I Have Enough?" you could put yourself in position to use your money for what you really want!"

Adams, who wrote the book, Debt Sucks: A College Students Guide To Winning With Money So They Can Live Their Dreams!, says you should put that money somewhere else.

"Spend it on your dreams," said Adams.  "On Black Friday, people spent an average of $369 on gifts. Imagine spending that amount of money funding your dreams, like starting a business.  There are million dollar companies that started on $500 or less.  Maybe you want to purchase your first home next year, $369 cal go towards your down-payment."

You can also spend them on your memories.

"There are so many people that say they can never go anywhere nice because it costs too much.  Right now you can go to Panama Canal for $500 including airfare!  For the amount of money that people can spend on electronics they could travel to another country and create a lifetime of memories!  Memories last forever, TVs do not!," said Adams.

It's something you might want to think about as you continue to shop this season.  "Before you go to the store or get online ask yourself, "Do I Have Enough?"
