Service & Sacrifice: Supporting Triad Heroes & Dispelling Stereotypes

Supporting Triad Heroes' Successes

Did you know, North Carolina is home to the third-largest military population and eighth-largest veteran population in the US? We all appreciate our local heroes, and you have two upcoming opportunities to show them you care.

Army veteran Jim Hoffman is the founder of American Heroes for North Carolina (AH4NC), a non-profit created by veterans for veterans.

He graduated from West Point and served more than 12 years active and reserve duty in the US Army, completing Ranger School and Airborne school.

Then, after watching people talk about the movie "American Sniper" about famous Navy Seal Chris Kyle, he said he realized there are stereotypes about veterans that need to be dispelled. He said there are misconceptions that all veterans come back from deployment and struggle with PTSD and need "handouts."

So, he created AH4NC.

"Our vision at AH4NC is to make our community a welcoming place for veterans. We strive to educate the community about the importance of supporting our veterans and about the value our veterans bring to the community. Also, we strive to educate veterans about their post-military opportunities and to encourage them to return to the Triad to live, work and play," Hoffman said.

AH4NC invites the community to two upcoming events. The first is a veterans recognition banquet to highlight veterans who have returned to our community to lead successful business careers. It is on Wednesday, November 8 at Koury Convention Center. WFMY News 2's Meghann Mollerus is proudly emceeing the event. Tickets can be purchased on the AH4NC website. And, mark your calendar -- Military Appreciation Day is May 19 at Carolina Field of Honor.
