Greensboro, N.C. -- It's the story that broke all of our hearts. Little Shalonda Poole was just seven-years-old when she was assaulted and killed behind Jones Elementary in Greensboro.
Shalonda's family never gave up hope her killer would be found and 23 years later someone was arrested in connection with Shalonda's death.
While the family waits for justice, they want Shalonda's fun spirit to live on in the community where she grew up. That's why they created the Shalonda Poole Fun Day to be held on April, 27, 2014 at Warnersville Recreation Center.
Shalonda's mother and family friends joined WFMY News 2's Tracey McCain on the Good Morning Show to talk about the community event.
"You have no idea how much we miss her, especially her twin sister," said Poole. "I want them to remember her. She was here to stay and even though she's gone we will not forget her and the community will not forget her either."
Throughout the years, the community has participated in balloon releases and candle-lighting ceremonies in little Shalonda's honor.
The family also dedicated a memorial in Shalonda's honor near the Warnersville Recreation Center.
On April 27, 2014, community organizers led by Portia Shipman and Tawana Rowland, will hold the first Shalonda Poole Kids Fun Day.
"We're having a fun day for children to remember Shalonda Poole as a young girl but also to bring awareness to sex offenders," explained Shipman, who's also head of the Sherri Denise Jackson Foundation. "Kids will play kick ball, plant a garden near the memorial and we'll have face painting and other things too."
But it's also about education. "We want them to learn what to do if they're around someone and they're uncomfortable and what to do if someone touches them," Shipman added. "This information is vital for not only parents but for the young ones."
To make this event go off without a hitch, the Poole family is asking for donations.
"Our budget is $500 right now," said Rowland. "We just have chips and drinks, but if there are any hot dog vendors out there or any anyone who wants to donate gift bags, we'll take anything."
To donate, contact the Sherri Denise Jackson Foundation at www.sdjfnc.org or call 336-510-9292.
The Shalonda Poole Kids Fun Day is scheduled for April 27, 2014 at Shalonda Poole Park at the Warnersville Recreation Center from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
