Stick To Healthy Habits Over The Holidays

Stick To Healthy Habits Over the Holidays: Part 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- You have so much to think about over the holidays, your health is probably nowhere near the top of the list, but it should be! Rima Kleiner, Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Consultant, has some tips to help you keep your health in check.

Kleiner said healthy habits start with what you eat. And what you eat before going to holiday parties and happy hours can make a big impact on what and how much you eat.

Studies show eating breakfast helps curb overeating later in the day.  Kleiner suggests making high-protein spinach breakfast wraps ahead of time and freezing them.

You don't want to skip meals either. Kleiner said skipping lunch can cause blood sugar levels to crash later in the day, leaving people feeling ravenous at a holiday buffet. She suggests eating a no-cook veggie teriyaki bowl for lunch, so the buffet isn't as tempting!

Kleiner also demonstrated how to make a green juice smoothie that is high in dietary fiber, which is important to keep you feeling fuller longer. She added that hydrating is really important to prevent overeating and over-drinking.

Kleiner said throughout the holiday season, stash-and-go snacks are important to keep you energized. She said you should stash snacks in your purse, car or desk at work.

Kleiner said think about snacks that are high in fiber and protein to keep you feeling fuller longer and prevent overeating and blood sugar crashes. For example, you can munch on a veggie-based snack like a mini bell pepper stuffed with soft cheese or a fruit-based snack  or easy-to-make energy balls.
