High Point Firefighters Get Bicycles

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- It's not uncommon to see a police officer riding a bike, instead of driving a police cruiser. But, what about seeing a firefighter on a bike?

You'll start seeing that in High Point. The High Point Fire Department used an $18,000 grant to buy a fleet of eight bicycles.

The fire department said the new bike response team will allow firefighters to be more mobile and make it easier to patrol High Point's large events, like the International Home Furnishings Market.

"When we have the furniture market and the roads are closed off due to heavy traffic," High Point Equipment Operator David Peters. "We'll be able to use this and not have to worry about navigating a truck through tighter areas."

These bikes are equipped with the same life saving tools found on a fire truck--AEDs, oxygen and other life support equipment.

The department said it already used the grant to purchase these eight bikes, but it hopes to eventually expand the bike response team.

CalSurance Associates and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company awarded the money for the bicycle purchases.
