LEXINGTON, N.C. – As Triad citizens, we are lucky enough to have some of the best barbeque in the country just miles away… Lexington Barbeque.
According to the publication, most of the restaurants on the list are located in big cities like New York, while Lexington is one of the few rural sites highlighted along with Taylor, Texas and Charleston, South Carolina.
At number 47, Lexington BBQ No. 1 was selected based on data from rankings on food and travel sites like Eater, Business Insider, and Trip Advisor, on the criteria of “nostalgia rating,” “taste rating,” “cult rating,” and “hospitality rating.”
Hal Johnson, a real estate agent from High Point and barbeque connoisseur, sits and eats his favorite meal, the sliced BBQ platter, almost every week for almost 20 years.
He says, “For pork shoulders, Piedmont style, this is as good as it gets.”
Rick Monk, the manager, says he started working at the restaurant with his father, owner Wayne Monk, at the age of 13 and has been ever since.
“It’s my social life, too,” Monk says. “These aren’t just my customers, they’re my friends now. And a local traffic to me is 100 miles, it’s right between Charlotte and all the way to Raleigh.”
But that many friends also means lots and lots of pork. On average, 6,000 to 7,000 pounds of it are smoked a week for the nearly 800 customers the joint gets a day.
The new restaurant’s new title comes just weeks ahead of the 33rd Annual Barbeque Festival celebrated in no other than Lexington, NC on October 28, 2017.

In light of the festival, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is joining in on the 'que fun, and will have a special train stop on the day of the festival that will drop patrons off just “steps from” the event.
“NC By Train’s Piedmont and Carolinian trains, which stop at seven stations between Charlotte and Raleigh, will drop off/pick up passengers in Lexington in the morning and afternoon,” NCDOT shared in a press release.
