Lexington Man Wins $1 Million From 'Ruby Red' Ticket

RALEIGH - A quick trip to the store to grab an ICEE and cash in a $20 scratch-off ticket turned into a lot more for a lucky Lexington man.

Justin Keitt, a FedEx driver, pulled into the 4 Brothers grocery store on Yadkinville Road in Pfafftown on his break wanting a cold treat on a hot day.

“It was so hot outside,” said Keitt. “So I went to get an ICEE and some snacks.”

Keitt cashed in a scratch-off ticket and used the money to buy a Ruby Red 7's ticket. He got back in his car, started scratching the Ruby Red and couldn't believe what he saw.

He won $1 million.

“I asked myself, ‘Is this real?,’ said Keitt. “I just didn’t believe it at first.”

After making some deliveries, Keitt drove home and put the ticket in a gun safe.

“I didn’t even want to take it out of my pocket.”

Keitt claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh Monday. He had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity with payments of $50,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum and after federal and state tax withholdings took home $417,012.

Keitt wants to use the money to start a wedding venue business and buy go-cart racing equipment for his eight-year-old daughter.

"She’s a great racer,” said Keitt. “I just want to help her win.”
