Madison Bridal Shop, Other Businesses Casualties of Flash Flooding

Flooding Damages Businesses In Downtown Madison

MADISON, N.C. -- Wednesday night's storm hit parts of Rockingham County hard, including downtown Madison.

Several businesses along Murphy St. are drying out after the street flooded Wednesday night.

"Last night it was a mess here," says Danny Smith, owner of Flynn Furniture & Carpets.

Workers there spent the morning bringing carpets outside to dry in the sun.  Smith says the store basement has more damage than the front of the shop, but expects it won't cost them too much once things are cleaned up.

"You just take it a day at a time," he says.  "Clean it up."

Some shop owners on Market St. were completely washed out.

"It's devastating because we worked so long and so hard to get it ready," says Allison Drake, owner of Magnolia's of Madison. "I just opened in March so I haven't even been in business that long."

Floodwater destroyed everything in her bridal shop - including all the wedding dresses.

"We got down here last night about 8 o'clock and open the front doors in the water just came surging out like a river."

Her neighbors are also reeling; trying to clean up the mess and salvage what they can.

"It breaks my heart because we put a lot of work into it and it's my favorite place to be," says Ashley Dilmi, who has a photography studio next door.  "But it's just heartbreaking."

Many shop owners say this has been a prime example of neighbors helping neighbors, with other shop owners and citizens pitching in to help those who suffered the most damage.

Madison is along the Dan River and the flood water had receded, for the most part, by Thursday morning.
