WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Winston-Salem Police a man driving the wrong way on US 52 S almost hit a police officer and then hit another vehicle head on Thursday night.
Police say it they received reports of a 2004 Nissan travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of US 52 near Liberty Street and Akron Drive around 10:30 pm. An officer was travelling southbound on US 52 near Germanton Road when the vehicle almost hit him, then hit another vehicle head on.
The people in that vehicle, 56-year-old David Stafford, 56-year-old Jeri Stafford, and 80-year-old Jean High each sustained injuries and were taken to local hospitals. Police say David Stafford and Jean High's injuries are considered life-threatening.
Police say Roberto Jose Martinez Lemus was driving the Nissan. He was also injured and transported to the hospital. Police charged him with:
- Driving While Impaired
- Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle (3 counts)
- No Operator’s License
- Careless and Reckless Driving
- Travelling the Wrong Way on a Highway
Police placed Martinez Lemus into custody at NC Baptist Hospital. He will receive a bond hearing upon his release from medical treatment.
The lanes stay closed for nearly six hours as police investigated. They reopened around 5:30am.
