Man Believed Killed In Hit-and-Run Died After Jumping From Cab: Police

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A man from Hickory died from injuries he sustained after jumping from a cab, Winston-Salem Police said Wednesday.

Tuesday investigators originally said 41-year-old Michal Curl died in an apparent hit-and-run. The Winston-Salem Police Department found Michael Jason Curl dead in the road after a preliminary investigation showed that Curl had been hit by at least one car.

Investigators now say Curl was a passenger in a Classic Cab and refused to pay his fare after arriving at his destination. The cab driver told officers that Curl jumped out of the passenger window of the moving cab. He died from injuries sustained when he landed, according to police.

The incident happened in the 400 block of Deacon Blvd.

Badara Gaye, the cab driver reported the incident to the cab company after driving off. Police say he didn't realize the severity of Curl's injuries. Gaye isn't facing any charges.

Police say they want to to talk to the driver of a red pickup truck that passed by shortly after the incident.

The case is still under investigation.

Police say this is the 20th traffic fatality of the year for Winston-Salem.
