Man Charged with Abusing His 5-Week-Old Baby

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Deputies in Forsyth County have charged a man with allegedly abusing a five-week-old baby. The crime was reported to officers Monday, February 17 by officials at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Deputies received a call to respond to the hospital on a possible child abuse case involving a 5-week old male infant. The infant arrived at Brenner's Emergency Department via EMS, after an emergency referral from the child's pediatric physician and the parents of the infant were with the child at the hospital.

According to the police report, medical evaluations of the infant showed he had serious injuries that included multiple fractures, bleeding on and within the brain, respiratory distress and other injuries that indicated severe child abuse. The baby is still hospitalized and the Forsyth County Department of Social Services (DSS) has taken custody of the child.

Parents of the infant have been given restricted contact.

After completing their investigation into the case, a warrant for arrest was issued Thursday, for Edwin Douglas Allen, the father of the infant. Allen has been taken into custody and charged with two felonious counts of Felony Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury.

He is in the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.
