HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Police in Hendersonville say a man who had been taken to the Henderson County jail after being arrested has died after a scuffle with officers.
Sheriff's Capt. Steve Carter said in a statement that Hendersonville police brought a man to the jail shortly before 3 p.m. Monday.
Carter said there was a brief scuffle as 55-year-old Bruce Dean Stafford was being booked into the jail and Stafford collapsed.
Carter says jail staff as well as Hendersonville firefighters and the county EMS tried to revive Stafford. He was taken to Pardee Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Charles McDonald says he's asked the State Bureau of Investigation to review the case.
