Mom, With Infant in SUV, Charged With DWI In Church Van Crash: NCSHP

STOKESDALE, NC - 17 people were injured Sunday morning when a SUV collided with a church van on US 158 near Kelly Lee Dr. in Stokesdale, according to NC State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).

The accident happened around 7:04am and  traffic was detoured around the area for hours, Trooper Chris Knox confirmed.  The crash happened when Diadra Shaffer who was traveling northeast on Highway 158 crossed the centerline and hit a van with 15 people inside. This caused the church van, which was traveling southwest to go off the right shoulder of the highway and overturn. Everyone was trapped in their vehicles until emergency responders arrived, Knox said.

The patients ranged in age from 1-month-old to 90 years old.

  • 2 Patients were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) via AirCare
  • 3 taken to WFBMC via ambulance
  • 3 taken to High Point Regional
  • 7 patients taken to Cone Hospital in Greensboro
  • 2 patients taken to Cone MedCenter in High Point

Diadra Shaffer, the driver of the SUV, had her 1-month-old son with her when the crash happened, Troopers said. She's facing charges of Driving While Impaired (DWI) of a substance other than alcohol, Careless and Reckless Driving, Misdemeanor Child Abuse, Driving Left of Center and Driving While License Revoked.

Jame Martin, the driver of the van, and the passengers are from Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witness out of Martinsville, Va. They were headed to Salisbury, NC, according to the NCSHP report.

Highway 158 reopened around 1pm this afternoon. Hazmat was on scene for most of the time dealing with a gas spill from the van.
