New Webcam Allows Parents To View NICU Babies

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Thanks to a generous donation to Brenner Children's Hospital, many families are able to watch their newborns from their electronic devices at home.

The Nicview system features webcams that are installed on individual incubators for each child. Brenner is the only hospital in the state of North Carolina using this technology and one of 31 in the country.

Parents and family members log-on to a secure site where they can watch their baby sleeping, getting fed, and their diaper changed anytime.

It works out perfect for Leigh Anne Lindsay in Summerfield who says she doesn't have to wait until she gets to the hospital to see her newborn twins. She told WFMY News 2, she feels better knowing her twins are being taken care of and she is able to see it through the webcam.

Leigh Ann and her husband' families also feel more involved since they are able to view the babies too. All Leigh Ann had to do was share her log-on information and password.

Dr. Cherri Welch, the Medical Director at the Brenner Neonatal Unit says it makes families feel like they can be in two places at once.

Welch said the webcams are funded entirely through a donation from the community. The video feeds can be viewed on iPads, iPhones, and other smart phones.
