No Longer Hanging Out To Dry: Customers Will Get Clothes Back From Cleaners

Customers To Finally Get Dry Cleaning Back

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Customers of a dry-cleaning business that shut down unexpectedly will soon get their belongings back, after the State’s Attorney General filed a court order Tuesday.

For more than a month now, several customers reported they have not been able to pick up their dry cleaning from Rodem Cleaners in Winston-Salem. The business abruptly closed early last month. The Department of Revenue shut the business down for unpaid back taxes.

And while it might seem like just a few pairs of pants, a couple shirts, or a suit, the idea of never getting any of it back led customers to complain to the Better Business Bureau and the AG, as many left notes on the door of the cleaners.

“We came here on October 2, I think it was, and it was supposed to have been ready in a couple days, and in a couple days, it was closed,” said Marshall Tucker.

His clothes – eight shirts and a sweater – are locked inside. He had been coming here for 20 years.

“We never had no problems. And they always did good service,” he said.

On October 4th, business was shut down for tax delinquency. But the owner never informed the customers - and left them hanging out to dry. Now Attorney General Josh Stein is stepping in with a court order.

“We went to court yesterday to ensure that people get their products back. It's their stuff and they're entitled to get it back,” he said.

Former customers will need to call the DOJ. From there, the AG will figure out when they need to come by the store to get their clothes.

“Even when it results in our doing things outside the norm, like returning people's dry cleaning to them, we are going to do that for them,” Stein said.

After a long month of no answers, this news is music to Tucker’s ears.

“I feel good!” he said.

The number customers will need call is 1-877-5-NO-SCAM. We have a link here to our state’s Department of Justice website.
