Off-Duty Deputy's Gun Discharges, Striking Daughter

LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- An off-duty Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy shot her 11-year-old daughter after the weapon accidentally fired while she was showing it to friends, Saturday night, officials said.

Misty Michelle Flowers, 38, who works as a deputy at the Lincoln County Courthouse, was showing the weapon to friends at her home on Loop Road when the gun fired and went through a wall striking the girl in the next room, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

The child was transported to Carolinas Healthcare System Lincoln and was later airlifted to CHS in Charlotte for surgery. The child is currently listed in stable condition.

Flowers, who previously worked for the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, has been with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office since August of 2015.

The incident is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation. Any further information on the incident will come from the SBI.
