Why Can You See The Moon & The Sun In The Sky During The Day

Greensboro, NC -- "Why can we see the moon and the sun in the sky during the day?" asks Fifth grader Robbie Boyd.

His classmates at Guilford Elementary had a few good guesses.

"Maybe the earth has orbited and one's probably on the way?"

"Maybe it is bright enough where you can see the moon still from a distance?"

The definitive answer comes from Roger Joyner of The Greensboro Science Center.

"You can see the sun and the moon up in the sky at the same time almost all the time except right around what we call new moon. You just dont always pay attention to it. Sometimes its in the morning daytime sky, sometimes its in the evening daytime sky."
