GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two of three lanes are still closed on I-85 North because of an overturned tractor-trailer.
The affected area is about a one-mile stretch from Exit 121, I-85 Business N/U.S. 220.
Haz mat crews are working to clean up spilled paint and other hazardous chemicals.
The N.C. Department of Transportation initially said lanes would reopen at noon, but a haz mat team is still working to transfer the material into another trailer, before the wrecker can flip the overturned trailer upright. When responders are ready for this to happen, Highway Patrol said it will temporarily shut down all lanes of I-85 for a few minutes.
NC DOT and Highway Patrol said this accident was one of dozens of weather-related crashes Tuesday morning. Ice was still apparent on interstates, as well as on bridges, overpasses and ramps. NC DOT ITS engineer Jeron Monroe said, "DOT crews will stay out here on the bare pavement routes, until we feel they're safe, and then they'll leave and go to the secondary routes. Right now, if people can, stay home because there's still ice out on the roadway."
Trooper Honda Martin said, "We're getting tired of the snow and the ice, especially in Guilford County. The last time I checked the computer, we still had several wrecks pending. "
