CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police sources told WBTV on Tuesday that the boyfriend of missing teacher Bianca Tanner, Angelo Grayson Smith, Junior, is "on the run."
Police issued an arrest warrant for Smith Sunday.
Wednesday, Charlotte Police told WFMY News 2 the warrant is in reference to Tanner's 3-year-old son who claims he saw Smith hurt his mom.
The warrant was issued two weeks after Bianca Tanner disappeared while in Charlotte. Tanner is a teacher at Reedy Fork Elementary School in Greensboro. Family members said she was planning to move to Charlotte with her three-year-old son at the end of the school year.
Police are calling the case a homicide.
Who is Angelo Smith, Junior?
Smith was born in Texas in 1984. He is 30 years old.
Court records show he also lived in Wisconsin where he was convicted of a minor traffic violation. He then moved to Maryland before coming to the Triad.
Once in Greensboro, Smith started school at North Carolina A&T State University. He graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Smith took three years off, but then started an A&T Master's program in 2011 to study Human Resources Management. School records show he was last enrolled in 2013, but didn't graduate.
While he was studying for his undergrad, he was also facing a protection order from a woman accusing him of physical and mental abuse. Court records show the woman said Smith slapped and strangled her. She claimed he also grabbed her hair, pulled her out of a pool and dropped her on a cement walkway. The order was dismissed because the victim didn't show up in court.
About 4 years later, another Greensboro woman took out a protection order against Smith. She claimed Smith verbally and physically abused her.
Smith is also wanted in Arkansas where an ex-girlfriend said he threw her on to the bed and tried to smother her. Our Charlotte news partner, WCNC, met a friend of Smith's who called him "one of the smartest people I've ever met."
That friend also described Smith as very self-assured -- the kind of man who doesn't mind telling you what he thinks and doesn't care if you agree with him or not.
We know Smith and Tanner had been dating for about six months. They met at an A&T homecoming event. She and her son recently moved to Charlotte to live with Smith.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say Smith was the last person to see Tanner. He has not been named as a suspect or person of interest in the Tanner case.
Tanner's family told the station they were in Charlotte on Sunday to search again for the missing mother. They passed out fliers and posted signs in North Charlotte near the couple's Druid Hills neighborhood.
