Police: Murder Spree Victim's Kids Were Upstairs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro police say the children of a woman killed in Monday's murder and assault spree were upstairs when Menice Smith shot her.

Police found 36-year-old Jamie Goode dead in her Sydney Oaks Drive home. The police department says Smith, the man suspected of killing Goode, lived a few houses away from Goode and her family.

Investigators are still looking for the reason why Smith killed Goode and Michaela Brewington; and assaulted Deborah Huffines, who is a U.S. postal worker.

Early Monday morning, Huffines was assaulted at a post office on Yanceyville Street. Officers found Goode dead in her home shortly after 9 a.m. They later found Brewington dead in her home on Pineway Drive.

Smith fatally shot himself Monday during a brief law enforcement chase on Elm-Eugene Street.

WFMY News 2 obtained a police search warrant Thursday on Brewington's home. According to the warrant, investigators took swabbings, photographs, bottles, a black holster and two boxes of .38 ammo. Police also seized Smith's 2001 Chevy Tahoe, which was parked at her home.
