Remembering Heroes | Memorial Day Events in the Triad

This Memorial Day, many of us will enjoy grilling out with friends and family or relaxing by the pool. 

But it's also important that we remember the heroes that made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can be free.

Boy Scouts Placing Flags on Veterans' Graves at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery

When: Saturday, May 27 starting at 8 a.m.

Where: Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery on High Point Road

Summary: Veterans' Committee and Boy Scout Troop 17 of Jamestown United Methodist Church will place American Flags at the graves of every veteran. 

Flags Placed on Graves of Veterans at Maplewood Cemetery in Greensboro

When: Saturday, May 27 at 9 a.m. 

Where: Maplewood Cemetery at 235 Bingham Street

Summary: American Legion Post 267, VFW Post 2087, Just One Foundation, and the Bethel AME Boy Scout Troop 723 will place the flags on veterans' graves. A monument will be dedicated to all five branches of the US military. The event is open to the public. 

Veterans Group Hosts Memorial Day Ceremony at Country Park in Greensboro

When: Sunday, May 28 at 2 p.m.

Where: Country Park, 3905 Nathaneal Green Drive

Summary: The program will include presentation of the colors by the 82nd Airborne Division Color Guard and an address by retired US Army Lt. Col. Susan Danielsen, Greensboro Police Department's public information officer. 

Memorial Day Ceremony at the Carolina Field of Honor in Kernersville

When: Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m.

Where: Carolina Field of Honor, Triad Park, Kernersville, NC 

Summary: This is the largest memorial to honor veterans on the East Coast outside of Washington D.C. The memorial opened in 2014 and over 2,500 veterans are already enshrined at the monument. The ceremony and parking are free and lawn chairs are encouraged. The event features color guards, music, the laying of the wreath, taps, and other commemorative activities. 

The NC Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony in Thomasville

When: Monday, May 29, events starting at 8 a.m. 

Summary: Events will begin with a solemn service at the Vietnam Veteran's Wall on I-85 between Thomasville and Lexington at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., the bandstand will open up with interviews by Chief of Staff Caron Myers. By 11 a.m., the parade will file in at Cushwa Stadium. At 12:15 p.m., parachutists will fly in carrying the stars and stripes. 

American Legion Post 522 Hosts Memorial Day Service in Lewisville

When: Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. 

Where: 6555 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC 27023

Summary: Before the ceremony begins, there will be a display of vintage military vehicles. Passed Post 522 members will be honored. Ceremonial wreaths will be placed at the Battle Cross Memorial and POW Memorial. 

Alamance County Veterans Honored at Memorial Day Service in Graham

When: Monday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. 

Where: Alamance County War Memorial on West Elm Street

Summary: The service will honor more than 240 Alamance County veterans who have died in our nation's wars beginning with the Civil War and continuing through the recent wars in the Middle East. 

Wreath Laying at Jamestown Veterans' Memorial

When: Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m.

Where: Jamestown Veterans' Memorial across from Town Hall

Summary: Flag raising and wreath laying ceremony at the Memorial site.
