Rules of Mandatory Evacuations

Rules For Mandatory Evacuations

St. Simons, GA -- Police left St. Simons Island Friday morning. They spent much of Thursday night announcing it on megaphones to the public. They also reminded people there to get out too before Hurricane Matthew hits.

2 Wants To Know what the rules are of a mandatory evacuation.

If there is an evacuation and you don't leave, you give up the option of getting help during the storm and possibly days after it's over.

Emergency Management makes it clear that you should prepare to be self sufficient for 72 hours after the storm if you stay,

Folks in Pawley's island South Carolina even handed out evacuation waivers making those points clear.

So why do people have an option?

According to UNC School Of Government, North Carolina can order voluntary and mandatory evacuations, but they can't really enforce it.

Other states like Texas can forcibly remove you.
