GREENSBORO, NC - The Guilford County Schools' community is mourning the death of student-athlete, Dez Woods. Woods, 16, attended Southwest Guilford High School and played on the basketball team.
Woods was killed Sunday around 9:30 a.m. in a crash in near Lexington, which is in Davidson County, while returning from a trip to Charlotte. Woods was a passenger in the car, Head Coach Guy Shavers confirmed to WFMY News 2.
Trooper Moultrie with the NC Highway Patrol said Woods was riding in a Mercedes going north on I-85 when the car ran off the road and overcorrected, hitting several trees. Brandon Lamberth, the driver and Woods' former teammate at Southwest, was charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and Careless and Reckless Driving.
The investigation is still ongoing and there's no word on what caused Lamberth to go off the road. Both were wearing seatbelts. Speed, alcohol, or drugs weren't factors. Lamberth was taken to Baptist Hospital with serious injuries.
The Southwest Guilford High Cowboys won the NC High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 4A State title game in March.
Southwest Guilford High's Principal, Mike Hettenbach, shared information he released to school staff Sunday about Dez Woods' death:
