Tornado Leaves Trail of Damage and Destruction Across Eden, Other Parts of Triad

Many people across the Piedmont Triad were greeted with a trail of damage and destruction after severe weather stormed through the area overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

EDEN, N.C.-- Many people across the Piedmont Triad were greeted with a trail of damage and destruction after severe weather stormed through the area overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

The WFMY News 2 storm team was tracking the storms all night, but it was you our viewers and users to brought it to our attention of all the damage in Eden. Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado struck near Eden.

The storm damaged a total of 25 homes and 9 businesses in the city, according to Eden Mayor Wayne Tuggle.

Some of the worst damage occurred at Cunningham Tire on Van Buren Road.

Owner David Cunningham says he still can't believe all the damage.

"I’m just so thankful we were not here. Human life is something you just can’t take for granted," said Cunningham. "All this stuff right here, we can build it back."

The National Weather Service is in Eden assessing the damage and has determined that a tornado did touch down in the area.

Several areas of the city remain blocked off while crews continue to clean up the damage.

Eden Police are asking people to avoid the center areas of the city if possible.

The Eden Fire Chief says they hope to have everyone's power restored by Saturday.
