Triad Woman Donates Wedding Dresses To Flooded Bridal Boutique

Paying It Forward: Triad Woman Donates Wedding Dresses To Madison Bridal Store

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NC -- The worst situations often bring out the best in people – sometimes through the kindness of strangers.

Before Saturday, Margarette Powell and Allison Drake had never met.

But now they have a special connection that formed over wedding dresses.

Just three months after opening her dream bridal boutique, Magnolia's of Madison, Drake was about to call it quits after flood damage ruined most of her inventory last Wednesday.

"We just put so much time and energy and money into this project,” said Drake. “It's really heartbreaking. It was a labor of love. Now it's gone."

But High Point's Margarette Powell stepped up to help after seeing Drake's story on WFMY News 2.

“I've known floods since I was four years old,” said Powell. “I'm now 81 and I know about flood victims.”

Powell is a retired boutique owner who just moved to High Point with a lot of leftover wedding dresses.

“My cousin said you have to sell them on eBay, I said no. I am so blessed every day,” said Powell. “I don't mind giving because God has given me so much.”

Powell asked us to set up an introduction and drove 40 minutes to Drake's shop.

She gave Drake five designer wedding gowns, two bridesmaids dresses, and a wedding vail.

“I am almost at a loss for words,” said Drake. “I am completely overwhelmed.”

Now, the future of Drake’s business is looking brighter, and it's all thanks to her new friend.

“She reminds me so much of my mother, her love of the business and these dresses,” said a teary eyed Drake. “I know my mom is looking down on you and smiling and would love to give you a big hug and I'm going to give you one for her.”

The women exchanged phone numbers and Drake told Powell she plans to call on her for business and fashion advice.

Crews are working to replace the flood damaged walls and floors in Drake’s boutique.

Drake says there’s no word on when she'll be able to re-open.
