MEBANE, NC -- A Triad family, desperate for answers, finally gets the closure they've been looking for.
The woman police say is responsible for driving the car that killed their son is now behind bars.
According to a news release, 77-year-old Barbara Wyatt turned herself in to police last night.
Police say she hit 23-year-old Christopher Askey when he was walking across the street -- and then she drove away.
The crash happened last Sunday at the intersection of North third and west center streets in Mebane.
Askey’s parents, Scott and Kelly, say this week has been an extremely difficult week.
Their son was taken without a goodbye.
Now, they're relieved that the suspect has turned herself in.
But they're not ready to forgive her for what happened to their son.
“Right now I feel empty and numb and angry but at the same time, I know I need peace in my heart and God will provide that for us at some point,” said Kelly Askey.
The Askeys find closure in the fact that Wyatt has been placed under arrest and the justice process has begun.
They find solace in the fact that their son was an organ donor!
Kelly says her son's lungs and liver have already been used to save 2 different lives!
“Now we know what his purpose was,” said a teary-eyed Kelly. “That was God's plan for him. All those years I prepared him for that.”
They have a remarkably upbeat attitude about the whole situation, but deep down, the Askeys know life will never be the same, without their son.
“This whole incident is going to not only affect our family but her family as well for the rest of their lives,” said Askey. “We should all hold in our hearts in everything else we do.”
The family says they want to thank everyone who has sent them love, support, and prayers.
They're holding a candle light vigil tomorrow night at 6:45 at the intersection of North Third and West Center Streets, where the crash happened, in Mebane.
Barbara Bigelow Wyatt faces charges of felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
