WFMY News 2 Announces Gannett Foundation Grant Recipient

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Recently, the Gannett Foundation awarded grants to the many communities served by Gannett Co., Inc.

WFMY News 2 President and General Manager Larry Audas presented a grant in the amount of $1,000 to Parker White, Founder/Volunteer Executive Director, BackPack Beginnings. This contribution will help serve and meet the needs of children suffering from hunger and trauma.

BackPack Beginnings was established in 2010 in response to the growing needs of underprivileged children in the community. Its mission is to provide children in need with nutritious food, comfort items or certain other basic necessities through the use of backpacks and other efficient means of distribution. Its Food BackPack Program aims to directly impact childhood hunger by sending hungry children home with bags full of nutritious, kid-friendly food over the weekends during the school year. This contribution will help serve and meet the needs of children suffering from hunger and trauma. The Gannett Foundation serves those communities in which Gannett Co., Inc. has a local daily newspaper, broadcast station or cable TV operation. The program makes contributions to qualified nonprofit organizations to improve the education, health and advancement of the people who live in Gannett communities. The contributions help to improve the quality of life and address the most pressing community issues. The foundation values projects that take a creative approach to fundamental issues as education and neighborhood improvement, economic development, youth development, community problem-solving, assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment.
