Baby Boy Found Alive In Trash Can; Mom Charged

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Greenville Times) -- A Greenville mother is facing child neglect and attempted murder charges after an infant boy was found in a trash can on Chaney Street, authorities said.

At about 4:30 Monday afternoon, the Greenville Police Department responded to a report of a baby in a trash can on Chaney Street, said Johnathan Bragg, Greenville Police Deparment spokesman.

Officers arrived to find a newborn in a plastic grocery bag wrapped in a pink blanket in a trash can, according to Bragg and arrest warrants.

The newborn was being treated by EMS and taken to the hospital where he is in stable condition, Bragg said.

Sharon Lenise Ferguson, 29, of 18 Chaney Street, is charged with unlawful neglect of a child and attempted murder, according to warrants.

Investigators received a statement that said the infant boy was born sometime Monday and they put in the trash can, according to warrants.
