UGA Fraternity suspended for a year for hazing

ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Georgia’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity was placed on a one-year suspension, effective immediately, after admitting to a “sustained hazing of University students” as detailed in an informal resolution agreement.

According to the University, the chapter engaged in sustained hazing of University students, including but not limited to forcing or requiring the consumption of tobacco products, holding line up-ups, requiring participation in physical activities including push-ups, and throwing food and condiments at students.

The release states that the Chapter is suspended through September 1, 2017, the same day that it may re-register with the UGA Greek Life Office. If reinstatement is granted, the Chapter will be on probation through December 15, 2019.

The informal resolution agreement issued by the University states that. the following regulations were violated:

CR.3.2 – Conduct that intentionally causes or provokes a disturbance that disrupts the academic pursuits, or infringes upon the right, privacy, or privilege of another person.

CR, 3.3 – Conduct that threatens or endangers the health or safety of another person, including but not limited to physical violence, abuse, intimidation, and/or coercion; or violation of a legal protective order.

CR, 4.2 – Providing, distributing, selling, or facilitating. The use or possession of alcoholic beverages except as permitted by law and University Alcohol and other Drug Policies.

CR. 12. 1 -  Participating in, condoning, encouraging, requiring, or allowing opportunity for hazing.

The Pi Kappa Pi Chapter bio on the University’s website states:  For almost a century, Pi Kappa Phi has been a leader at the University of Georgia in the areas of academics, athletics, and service. As "leaders by choice", the brothers of Pi Kappa strive to uphold a reputation of success in and out of the classroom. In recent years, Pi Kappa Phi has maintained an average chapter GPA in the top ten among UGA fraternities while enjoying an active social calendar including tailgates, socials, date nights, Rose Ball Formal and mountain weekends. They are known on campus for strong recruitment, brotherhood and leadership. Pi Kappa Phi is the only IFC fraternity with its own philanthropy, PUSH America which benefits the handicapped.
