This year's election will likely be remembered for reaching a lot of new lows in American politics. It's been a campaign full of sex scandals, leaked emails, criminal investigations and apparent Russian intervention. Yet, it is the level of rancor and the nastiness of the insults that have really come to define the 2016 election season.
Those insults continued on the debate stage at a pace not seen before in modern politics. The snubs and slights flew so fast that it's hard to remember them all. So, we've rounded up the top insults from the three debates:
'Donald, I know you live in your own reality'
In the first debate, Trump went after Clinton for her support of NAFTA and the Trans Pacific Partnership. When he alleged that Clinton once referred to the TPP as the "gold standard" of trade deals Clinton questioned Trump's grip on reality.
"Well Donald, I know you live in your own reality but that is not the facts," she said.
Clinton: I'm glad Trump never stiffed my dad
Clinton attacked Trump's business record in the first debate, saying he stiffed thousands of people over the years. "I can only say that I'm certainly relieved that my late father never did business with you," she said.
Trump: Clinton 'has tremendous hate in her heart'
In the second debate, Trump said of Clinton, “Believe me, she has tremendous hate in her heart, and when she said 'deplorables,' she meant it.” For good measure, he added, “she’s got tremendous hatred.”
Trump calls Clinton the devil
"All you have to do is take a look at Wikileaks and just see what they said about Bernie Sanders," Trump said in the second debate. "Bernie Sanders between superdelegates and Deborah Wasserman Schultz, he never had a chance. And I was so surprised to see him sign on with the devil."
Trump unfit to serve
"You know, with prior Republican nominees for president, I disagreed with them on politics, policies, principals, but I never questioned their fitness to serve. Donald Trump is different," Clinton said in the second debate.
Trump tells Clinton if he was prez, she'd be in jail
At one point in the second debate, Trump said that he would assign a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of State. “It's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” Clinton said in response to the unprecedented threat.
"Because you would be in jail,” Trump shot back.
Clinton hits Trump on Republicans dumping him
When Trump continued to hammer Clinton for her emails in the second debate, Clinton hit back. “OK, Donald. I know you're into big diversion tonight. Anything to avoid talking about your campaign and the way it's exploding and the way Republicans are leaving you.”
'You're the puppet!'
The third debate devolved into a playground argument when Clinton said Trump was Vladimir Putin's puppet. "No puppet. No puppet," Trump retorted. "You're the puppet. You're the puppet."
Trump calls Clinton 'nasty'
Near the end of the third debate, which was generally more civil than the previous two, Trump interrupted Clinton to call her "such a nasty woman" after she implied Trump would try to find a way to get out of paying into Social Security.
