SAN FRANCISCO — Hurricane Harvey and the devastating flooding that's come in its wake could force as many as 30,000 out of their homes. The items on the Red Cross wish list on Amazon give a glimpse of what's immediately important to those who have lost everything.
Staying connected is clearly a high priority. Topping the list are Android and iPhone charging cables, "so that people in temporary shelters can charge their phones."
Next on the list is a 25-foot extension cord, to bring power to individuals in shelters, followed by first aid kits.
he final two paint a human picture of the reality faced by Texans who have had to leave their homes with little more than the clothes on their back.
The Red Cross is asking for people to buy toddler-sized pillows. These "no pillowcase needed" toddler pillows are described as those "Used by Mass Care in Red Cross shelters. Provides pillows for toddlers to sleep in temporary shelters," according to the list.
The last is a Pack n' Play collapsible playpen that doubles as a crib. "Used by Mass Care in Red Cross shelters. Provides a safe space for toddlers to sleep in temporary shelters," according to the list.
According to the American Red Cross, on Monday night more than 17,000 people sought refuge in shelters. Many of them were families with children. FEMA says those needing shelter could climb to 30,000.
All items purchased will be sent directly to the Red Cross.
