Renaissance Community Co-op Grocery Store Opens in Former "Food Desert"

New Co-Op Grocery Store Opens In Food Desert

GREENSBORO, NC -- The brand new Renaissance Community Co-op Grocery Store is now open on Phillips Avenue, an area that has long been considered a "food desert."

This is a deal nearly 20 years in the making.

The Winn-Dixie that used to be there closed in 1998.

Since then, the neighborhood has been without a local grocery store.

Several times, the City of Greensboro tried to bring in a new grocery store but were unsuccessful.

So, the community decided to solve their own problems.

They all pitched in enough money, time, and effort to build their own community grocery store.

"I'm so happy for the grocery store. All this fresh fruit, it looks so good," said James Alston, a shopper at the store. "And it's so convenient for me. I'm so happy about this grocery store and I hope everyone else in the neighborhood is happy, too."

There are more than 920 owners of the grocery store.

Each community member who wants to own a piece of the store can pay $100 and become a part owner.

The store opened this past Friday.

The Renaissance Community Co-op Grocery Store is hosting its Grand Opening on November 5.
