Highway 29 Reopens After Tractor Trailer Overturns

Highway 29-N Lanes Back Open

GREENSBORO, N.C. - GREENSBORO, N.C. -- All lanes of Highway 29 North at the East Wendover Avenue exit have reopened after a tractor trailer overturned Wednesday morning.

The big rig overturned around 9:30 a.m. Fire officials said the truck was carrying hazardous materials and bleach was leaking. Dwayne Church with Greensboro Fire Department said firefighters spent much of the day plugging and damming the sewer system. They also had the DOT bring a sand truck to help with the process.

Church says Hazmat confirmed the chemicals in the truck were 330 gallons of potassium chloride, 330 gallons of bleach, and 330 gallons of sodium hydroxide.

No other cars were involved in the accident.

Dispatchers with Greensboro Police said a passerby was able to pull the driver out of the truck until emergency crews arrived. Police said the driver was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
