Adult Clown Costumes Banned from NC Halloween Festival

Belmont bans adults from wearing clown costume to city's Halloween festival

BELMONT, N.C. -- The City of Belmont is banning clowns from its upcoming Halloween festival.

Flyers promoting the city's "Boo Festival" are circulating, promising costume contests and fun activities for the children. In small print at the bottom of the flyer, it states that adults are not permitted to wear clown costumes.

That's fine with mom-of-two Emily Gaddis.

"I think people take things to the extreme, but given what all has been going on, I don't blame them," she says, referring to the multiple "creepy clown" incidents around the country.

"People are sorta on edge this year so it's probably smart."

Gaddis plans on attending the festival Saturday. She does not anticipate any issues or cause for concern, but is glad the city is erring on the side of caution.

"It's better to be safe that sorry. Especially when you have little ones, your perspective kinda changes," Gaddis says.

An employee of the city's parks and recreation department confirmed the ban, citing safety concerns, but directed NBC Charlotte to the department's interim director for future information. He did not return multiple requests for comment.
