GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford County Hotel Association hosted the “Fastest Bed Maker in Guilford County” Contest at the Embassy Suites Hotel – Greensboro.
Dozens of housekeepers from hotels in Guilford County gathered in the lobby of the Embassy where four bare beds waited to be made.
There were eleven rounds of fast-bedmaking comprised of at least five competitors.
The eleventh round determined the Fastest Bed Maker Champion. The four competitors were Dmarco Wise with Homewood Suites, who came in first place with a 1:36;56 time; Irma Benitez with Airport Marriot, who won second place with a 1:22;32 time; Sandra Hernandez with the Hampton Inn Coliseum at 1:29;13; and Moe Nyein also with Homewood Suites in 4th place with a 1:38;67 total time.
Wise, who will be splitting his $200 First Prize among his colleagues, got very lucky.
“I was actually a substitute, so it just worked out!” he said.
Last year, Benitez, who has competed since 2004, won 1st place with a winning time of one minute and twelve seconds. She’s won nine times and lost two, including this year.
Benitez says that the secret to her success has been loving what she does.
“I think that the most important thing is that enjoy it, and if you like it, you’ll do it with passion, because it doesn’t matter what kind of work you do, you can enjoy it, even though it’s work,” Benitez said.
Both Benitez and Wise said they look forward to competing next year.
Benitez even joked about never practicing and finally having to start doing it with her recent loss.
“I’m a fast-worker so that’s why I never practice, but I think I’m going to have to start,” she said.
