In $25M Gift, Casino Mogul Bets On Blindness Cure

Iowa City, IA - Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn is donating $25 million to the University of Iowa to accelerate the search for cures to rare eye diseases such as the one that hampers his own vision.

The billionaire chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts Ltd. will pay the gift over five years to support the university's Institute for Vision Research, which was renamed Thursday in his honor.

The institute is a leader in genetic testing for eye disease and is seeking to develop gene and stem cell therapies that could someday restore vision for patients.

Wynn has retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that affects one in 4,000 people and causes night blindness and weakness in peripheral vision. The 71-year-old says he's thrilled with the scientific progress that's been made in the field.
