WFMY News 2 Weather: Winter Outlook

WFMY News 2 Winter Outlook

GREENSBORO, NC -- This winter could be a bit drier than average, with near-normal temps, and near normal snowfall. That's the word from the WFMY News 2 Weather Team, which released their winter outlook Tuesday.

"One of the driving factors behind the upcoming winter is a developing La Nina," says Chief Meteorologist Tim Buckley. "That's when waters in the Pacific are a bit cooler than average. It's the opposite of El Nino, and can impact the weather over North America."

For the Piedmont, that can mean a less active storm track, fewer than average outbreaks of cold air, and an overall drier winter. The News 2 Weather Team analyzed 5 winters with similar conditions in preparing this outlook. The "analog years" used are the winters of 1954-55, 2000-01, 2005-06, 2008-09, 2011-12.
