WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The Winston-Salem Police Department released their 2016 crime statistics this morning.
When it comes to violent crimes, so far in 2016, there have been 20 murders, 84 rapes, and 318 robberies. The number of murders and rapes are up over the past two years. Robbery is the only violent crime category that decreased.
Chief Barry Rountree said, "Although the increase the number of homicides tends to capture the public's attention, I urge them to look at the total picture. The overall crime rate has dropped more than 5 percent this year, and that's good to see."

Information from Winston-Salem Police: Overall, there has been a 3.4 percent increase in “Part 1” violent crimes (homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) for the first nine months of 2016, compared with the same period in 2015. Thus far in 2016, there have been 84 rapes, compared with 72 in 2015; 318 robberies, compared with 322 in 2015, and 1,043 aggravated assaults, compared with 1,011 in 2015. Part 1 property crimes (burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) are down 2.4 percent, resulting in an overall drop in Part 1 crime of 1.7 percent compared with 2015.
The crime rate for Part 2 crimes, which are less serious offenses such as drug charges, vandalism and disorderly conduct, is down 6.9 percent from 2015 and down 7.9 percent from 2014.
Overall, the crime rate for the period Jan. 1 through Sept. 30, 2016, is 5.4 percent lower compared to the same period in 2015, and 5.6 percent lower compared to the same period in 2014.
