PHILADELPHIA - North Carolina tailback Giovani Bernard is one of 16 semifinalists for the 2012 Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year. Maxwell Football Club President, Ron Jaworski, announced the 2012 semifinalists Monday.
Bernard leads the nation in all-purpose yards per game, punt return average and scoring per game.
He is alslo third in the country in rushing. In seven games this season, Bernard has 930 rushing yards and has scored 15 touchdowns.
Last season, the Maxwell Award went to Andrew Luck from Stanford University while the Bednarik went to Tyrann Mathieu of LSU. Luck is now the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts.
The winners of the 76th Maxwell Award and the 18th Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 6, 2012.
Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA Head Football Coaches, Sports Information Directors and selected national media.
