Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Rod Rucker tallied a double-double with 21
points and 11 rebounds as the UAB Blazers used a second-half surge to take
down the SMU Mustangs, 74-69, in a Conference USA bout at Bartow Arena.
Fahro Alihodzic shot 7-of-11 from the field off the bench on his way to 18
points for UAB (15-14, 7-7 C-USA), which extended its winning streak to a
season-long four games. Jordan Swing and Robert Williams each poured in 11
points for the hosts.
For SMU (14-15, 4-10), Ryan Manuel scored 15 points, Nick Russell had 14
points and five assists, Shawn Williams chipped in 13 points, and Cannen
Cunningham added 12 points, five assists and five rebounds. The Mustangs have
lost three of their last four contests.
After outshooting UAB from the field in the first half, 58.3 percent to 32.1
percent, SMU took a 33-27 advantage into intermission.
SMU continued its hot field goal shooting after the break (.571), but UAB also
heated up by making 55.6 percent of its attempts from the floor in the second
half. The teams traded several leads in the final 20 minutes, but the Blazers
received a pair of free throws from Rucker at the 4:39 mark to take a two-
point advantage and they led the rest of the way.
The difference was made at the foul line, where UAB shot 21-of-28. SMU was
just 7-of-9 from the stripe.
