WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Chad Hedlund's 39-yard field goal was the only scoring as Wake Forest's defense dominated play in Saturday's annual spring game at BB&T Field.

Head coach Jim Grobe led the Deacons through a 70 minute scrimmage in front of 4,200 fans at BB&T Field. The scrimmage included 68 plays with 32 on the round and 36 through the air.

Incumbent starting quarterback Tanner Price completed nine of 16 passes for 82 yards while Patrick Thompson connected on four of seven for 32 yards. Kevin Sousa, Pat Long and Tyler Cameron also saw action during the scrimmage.

The defense had four interceptions on the day with Hunter Williams, Ryan Janvion, Merrill Noel and A.J. Marshall each recording one pick.

"The defense was awesome today," said Grobe. "I thought they played great. We really dumbed the defense down today, we didn't blitz and we didn't play a lot of different coverages. It's amazing how good they played when they know what to do and didn't have a lot of thinking going on. That ought to be a lesson for our coaches."

Wake Forest's 32 rushing plays netted -5 yards on the afternoon. Deandre Martin led all ballcarriers with 10 yards on four carries while Sousa picked up eight yards on seven carries. The defense tallied five sacks for 37 yards in losses.

Grobe said the intent of today's scrimmage was to work on the throwing game.

"On offense, we really haven't thrown the ball much this spring," said Grobe. "We have to run the ball better. There's no question about it. We've spent a lot of time this spring running the ball and we thought today would be a great day to come out and throw it more. One of our issues is we're thin right now at wide receiver. Four of the guys we're counting on for next year aren't out here right now. We really wanted to watch Pat (Thompson) and Kevin (Sousa) and Tyler (Cameron) throw the ball. The defense had the upper hand today and hopefully we learned a few things about the quarterbacks today and know what we have to work on when we come back in August."

Cameron entered the scrimmage on the fourth offensive series and missed on one pass attempt before running for a three-yard loss. He suffered a sprained knee on the play and did not return to action.

Hedlund's field goal culminated a 10-play, 43-yard drive that was engineered by Price. Price completed five of six passes on the drive for 50 yards. He was also sacked once for a nine-yard loss after the Deacons had reached the 13-yard line.

Tight end Daniel Vogelsang had four receptions for 53 yards including the longest catch of the scrimmage, a 20-yard reception from Price on the scoring drive. Jonathan Williams also caught four passes for 28 yards while Orville Reynolds and Brad Idzik each made three catches.

Wake Forest will open the season at home against Presbyterian on Thursday, August 29 at BB&T Field.
