North Carolina has one of the lowest car insurance rates in the country, but that could change. An amendment to a Senate Bill would raise rates for more than a million drivers around the state.
Along with higher rates, the bill would limit the state insurance commissioner's ability to block rate hikes. It would also let insurers file unlimited rate increases mandatory coverage.
Apples-to-apples policy shopping would be prevented by North Carolina driver, and in the end, it could result in more uninsured drivers.
North Carolina has the third lowest car insurances rates for commuters, according to Insure.com's 2013 national survey. It also has the seventh-lowest overall rates according to the Insurance Information Institute.
