HIGH POINT-THOMASVILLE, N.C. - C.J. Hinojosa's bases-clearing double in a four-run fourth inning that pushed Team USA by the HiToms 5-2 in an exhibition game at Finch Field in High Point-Thomasville.
HiToms starter Dylan Stoops yielded a single to Michael Conforto to lead off the fourth with Team USA leading 1-0 before Jared Foster committed a throwing error on a groundball by Sam Travis, sending the runners to second and third. Brad Zimmer hit a sacrifice fly to center to score a run before Stoops got Matt Chapman to lineout to Foster at third. Kyle Schwarber then singled before Stoops walked Nate Irving to load the bases. Hinojosa then crushed a three-run double off the wall in right field as Team USA took a 5-0 lead.
Team USA starter Luke Weaver hit trouble in the fourth, issuing three walks, including one to Weston Jackson with the bases loaded to put High Point-Thomasville on the board at 5-1.
Kyle Martin creamed a solo home run to right field off reliever Tommy Thorpe to make it 5-2 in the eighth.
Ryan Burr struck out two in a perfect ninth for the save. Cole Irvin worked 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and a walk with four strikeouts for the win. Team USA is now 7-0 against Coastal Plain League competition this summer. Stoops surrendered five runs, four earned, on four hits with three walks and two punchouts to take the loss.
The two teams will conclude their two-game series tomorrow at 5 pm.
