SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Four Elon Phoenix football players were among those honored by the Southern Conference on Nov. 26 with all-league or all-freshman team accolades. Junior Kierre Brown was a second-team All-SoCon selection as a return specialist by both the coaches and media.
The maroon and gold placed three on the league's all-freshman squad -- running back B.J. Bennett, linebacker John Silas and punter David Petroni.
Brown, a native of Charlotte, N.C., ranked second in the SoCon by averaging 24.2 yards per kick return over the course of 12 games. He also returned five punts for an average of 21.8 yards and one touchdown. His punt return TD was the first for the program since 2009. Brown was named the league's special teams player of the week following the final game of the 2013 campaign. As a receiver, Brown caught 50 passes for 448 yards and two scores. He also ran the ball 14 times for 144 yards.
Bennett, who hails from West Columbia, S.C., was one of three Phoenix running backs to rush for more than 400 yards in 2013. Bennett compiled a team-best 464 rushing yards on 123 carries in 10 games. His four rushing touchdowns were tied for the most on the squad. In the passing game, Bennettt caught 19 balls for 116 yards and one TD.
Silas, a resident of Powder Springs, Ga., finished 2013 ranking second on the team with 71 total tackles. Of those stops, six were for a loss, including 1.5 sacks. Silas broke up two passes and posted one quarterback hurry. Against Georgia Southern, Silas amassed a personal-best 14 total tackles. He also recorded 12 total tackles, including six solo stops, in a victory at SoCon champion Furman.
Petroni, a native of Buford, Ga., averaged 42.1 yards per punt during his freshman campaign. He twice booted punts of 59 yards and 14 of his 73 kicks were for 50 or more yards. Of his 73 punts, 33 were placed inside the 20-yard line and five went for touchbacks.
