BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University running back Marcus Cox (Dacula, Ga./Dacula) earned second-team recognition as an all-purpose back on 247Sports' true freshman all-America team, which was announced on Monday.
Of 247Sports' 53 true-freshman all-Americans, Cox is the only one from the NCAA Division I FCS ranks (Appalachian State played its final FCS season in 2013 before it joins the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference in 2014).
The Southern Conference Freshman of the Year is also one of only three representatives on the team from non-Bowl Championship Series conferences (joining a pair future Sun Belt adversaries, first-team punter Austin Rehkow of Idaho and second-team running back Elijah McGuire of Louisiana-Lafayette).
Cox set Appalachian State freshman records and led the SoCon with 1,250 rushing yards, 1,809 yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns in his first collegiate campaign. He also tied a school record with 15 rushing touchdowns and set a new conference record by being named the SoCon Freshman of the Week six times. In addition to being the consensus SoCon Freshman of the Year, he was also a first-team all-conference honoree and the league's Offensive Player of the Month for November.
