GREENSBORO, NC--- The Greensboro College Pride men's basketball teamed opened the 2014 year with a 91-75 victory against the Red Dragons of Oneonta State at Mayo C. Harlow Memorial Court on Wednesday afternoon.
In the first half of play, Greensboro started out on a 12-2 run over the first six minutes of the game and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. In the early run for the Pride, Damian Dixon and Jermaine Batescontributed four points each during the early run. After Greensboro jumped out to the early, the Red Dragons used a 6-0 run of their own to pull the game within four at 12-8 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half of play. Once Oneonta State went on the run, the Greensboro offense found its stride once again pushing out to their largest lead of the half at 28-14 with 9:46 remaining. The Red Dragons chipped away at the Greensboro lead for the remainder of the half, but The Pride was able to go into the with a seven point lead at 40-33.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Red Dragons began to show life again using a 5-0 run to pull within two at 40-38 with 19 minutes remaining in the game. After Oneonta State pulled within two, Tracy Jester connected on his only basket of the game to push back out to a five point lead at 43-38 with 17:31 remaining. The score would remain close until late in the half when The Pride was able to pull the lead back to double figures when Bates converted an old fashion three point play making the score 77-66 with just under five minutes remaining in the game. Over the last five minutes of the second half of play Devan Gregory scored five of his team leading 11 second half points leading them the 91-75 victory.
Greensboro College had four different players score in double figures with Devan Gregory leading the way with 21 points. Damian Dixon added 18 points as well, while Will Griffin scored a career high 16 points. Jermaine Bates led the way for The Pride on the boards with 12 to go along with his 14 points in the game. Greensboro College held a 42-32 advantage on the boards, with 16 of them coming on the offensive end of the floor leading to 13 second chance points. The Pride was able to force 16 Red Dragon turnovers and was able to turn them into 23 points.
With the win for The Pride, they snap a six game losing streak and move to 3-6 on the season heading into USA South Athletic Conference play. The Greensboro College men's basketball team will welcome USA South member Huntingdon College to Hanes Gym and Mayo C. Harlow Court on Saturday afternoon with the second half of a double header.
