Putnam wins by 2 in Mexico

Leon, Mexico (Sports Network) - Michael Putnam fired a 6-under 66 on Sunday and secured a 2-stroke victory at the Mexico Championship.

Putnam was ahead of the chasing field by a single stroke entering the tournament's 72nd hole, where the Washington native locked up his second Web.com Tour victory with a birdie. He finished at 13-under-par 275, two shots clear of Alex Prugh, Whee Kim and Wes Roach.

The third round was completed Sunday morning after lightning and high winds resulted in a suspension a day earlier. Prugh and Kim held the lead when the third round wrapped up, but they both carded final-round 72s at El Bosque Country Club to drop from the top spot. Roach, meanwhile, shot 70.

Tim Wilkinson (72) placed solo fifth at 10-under, while Mathew Goggin (73), Chesson Hadley (69) and Jose de Jesus Rodriguez (69), the lone Mexican to make the weekend, tied for sixth at minus-9.

Jim Renner (71) was one stroke behind Putnam entering the final hole, but he stumbled to a triple-bogey 8 and dropped into a tie for ninth at 8-under alongside D.J. Brigman (69) and Andrew D. Putnam (69).
