No. 1 Deacs Clinch Quarterfinal Berth with 2-0 Win over Butler

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Top-ranked Wake Forest clinched a berth into the NCAA Quarterfinal with a 2-0 win over No. 19 Butler at Spry Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Demon Deacons (19-1-2) will play the winner of Stanford and Coastal Carolina, which started at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday. The quarterfinal game will be played at Spry on Saturday at 5 p.m.

After being tied 0-0 with the Bulldogs (14-5-2) at halftime, Brandon Servania and Jon Bakero tallied second-half goals to give the Deacs the victory.

In the 52nd minute, off the first of two Ema Twumasi assists, Servania rifled an upper-90 shot inside the near post for what proved to be the game-winner.

Bakero added an insurance goal in the 86th minute. After an Omir Fernandez shot was saved, Twumasi one-timed a pass into the box for Bakero, who put away his 16th goal of the season. The goal gave Bakero 100 career points, making him the fourth Deacon all-time to reach that mark.

Andreu Cases Mundet made a pair of saves for his 12th solo shutout of the year - the team's 13th. That total is one off the program record of 13, shared by Brian Edwards (2007) and Akira Fitzgerald (2008).

After a fairly even first half, the Wake Forest offense took over in the second period, where it had a 14-3 advantage in shots and 6-1 lead in corners. Overall, the Deacs had a 19-6 edge in shots and 10-3 advantage in corners.

Butler keeper Eric Dick made five saves in the losing effort for Butler.
