Watch out, Superman. Jesse Eisenberg's coming for you.
The Social Network star has been cast as nemesis Lex Luthor in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie (still untitled), Warner Bros. Pictures announced Friday.
"LexLuthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman's rivals, hisunsavory reputation preceding him since 1940," director Zack Snydersaid in a press release. "What's great about Lex is that he existsbeyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He's acomplicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth, andprominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge theincredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us toexplore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in somenew and unexpected directions."
Also added to the cast is Jeremy Irons, who will play Batman's trusted adviser, Alfred Pennyworth.
"As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne'smost trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and fatherfigure," Synder said. "He is an absolutely critical element in theintricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himselfinto Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned andgifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man whomentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade thatencapsulates Bruce Wayne."
Ben Affleck will play Batman (the announcement of which sent the Internet spiraling out of control last fall), and Gal Gadot will suit up as Wonder Woman. Henry Cavill will reprise his Superman role from 2013's Man of Steel.
The movie is set to open May 6, 2016.
