ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Fort Zumwalt South Junior Andrew Honerkamp knocked it out of the park Monday during his broadcast debut on NewsChannel 5 at 6 p.m.
Alongside Rene Knott, Andrew helped recap the Blues shootout vs. the Wild, the most recent St. Louis University basketball game and the Cardinals' spring training scrimmage.
Andrew was born with cerebral palsy, and dreams of becoming a sportscaster. His friends have launched a social media campaign – using #AndrewOnSportsCenter – to make that dream a reality.
"He always has a smile on his face and is always positive. If you are having a bad day, he will cheer you up instantly," friend Harrison Stephan wrote in e-mail to NewsChannel 5. "He told me it would be awesome if he could get on the show for a little and see what it is like."
With Stephan and his parents by his side, Andrew came to the NewsChannel 5 studio before the show to learn the ropes, watching Rene write his scripts and the producers build the sports rundown.
Honerkamp has been managing of FZS's basketball team since his freshman year. He also manages the school's baseball team and plays golf.
"Wow, it was so much fun today," Andrew tweeted after the show. "Thanks to @ReneKnottSports and @ksdknews for an awesome time. Plus, I think I killed it."
Anchor Mike Bush is in touch with his friends at ESPN, and working on getting Andrew a tour.
